What’s Your Unit?

There’s a question commonly asked within the gambling community from one player to another: “what’s your unit?” Your unit is defined by the amount of money you think in multiples of; if you perceive a thousand dollars as ten sets of 100 dollars, that makes your unit 100 dollars. In college, a twenty dollar bill is at least four sets of five dollar bills, and maybe even 20 sets of one dollar bills, if you remember that one dollar can buy you four packages of Nutty Bars.

The higher your unit goes up, the harder you are to please. If you were to sit at the blackjack table with $1,000 and win $10, chances are you’ll ignore it unless it happens 50 more times in pretty good succession, when maybe you’ll think about getting up and calling yourself a winner. This is the reason gamblers bet according to their unit. Professional blackjack books say the proper betting amount is determined by the starting bank divided by 30, which in the case of $1,000 would be $33.33 a bet.

Oh, one question left to answer. What is your unit? If you remember how many dinners and movies and tanks of gas and iPhone apps $1000 can but you, your unit is probably going to be $25, as in “I have 40 chances to win.” If you were to plop down at the table after a night of losing $50,000 and taking your last $1,000 out of the ATM, your unit isn’t going to be the same. It’s not going to be $25. It’s probably not even $100 or even $1000 for that matter. The unit is probably far too big to achieve any success worth appreciating given the relatively small amount of each bet.

I think the same question is true in the case of happiness: what’s your unit? If you take a look at everything around you, can you see how much there is to be happy about? And if you’re coming up short, could it be because you’re thinking in units that are too big for your bank? Seeing the things that matter to you as smaller and more abundant is a difficult task once you’ve visualized them as indefinably large and hard to count, but in the end, you’ll get more bang for your buck.

I love Spring

Spring is such a beautiful, rejuvenating, just-what-I-need sort of season, and I couldn't be happier that it has arrived. I'm ignoring the prospect of snow coming this evening (seriously Syracuse?), and instead focusing on the warmth in the air, and the ability to play more outside these days. I always feel so much healthier and happier when I can enjoy the outdoors.

I felt so at peace the other evening when I was inside boyfriend's house as it was raining, thundering, and lightening outside. He called me over to the open front door just to smell the outdoors. It just smelled so fresh and clean, and we just stood there for a few moments taking it all in. You gotta love that.

Like I mentioned above, an additional perk of the nicer weather is I can enjoy playing/exercising outside. Although I've been working for a bunch of months now on healthier exercise and eating habits, the sun still shining when I get out of work makes it SO much easier. I am obsessed (OBSESSED) with salads these days. In celebration of healthier habits, I want to share a healthy brownie recipe with you! I made these on Wednesday, and (surprisingly-beans!) they are really yummy.

I'm looking forward to a relaxing weekend where I can 'spring clean' my life. I'm looking forward to getting organized and planning some fun for the near future. Enjoy the brownies (thanks to boyfriend's co-worker for the recipe!)! Enjoy Spring!

Here’s the recipe for the bean brownies. You can use chick peas, black beans, or red beans. For the sweetener I use agave nectar because it’s better than sugar nutrition/health wise. However, you can still use sugar although I’ve never tried the recipe with sugar before. You can get agave nectar at Wegman’s in the nature’s market section.

Bean brownies

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips (I prefer dark and sometimes dairy free choco chips)
1 can garbanzo beans, drained & rinsed (if you’re using home made beans, use the equivalent of 1 can. Alternatively, you can use black or red beans as well)
4 eggs (I use 1 whole, and 3 whites)
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup to 3/4 cup agave nectar (depending on sweet preference. for those not used to 'whole' foods, i'd recommend using 3/4 cup)
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp sea salt
1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2. In a blender or food processor, combine all ingredients except chocolate chips.
4. Melt chocolate chips in a double boiler or heat in the microwave for 2 mins.
5. Add melted chips to blender and blend everything until smooth. Make sure there are no bean chunks.
5. Pour into 9' or 8 x 8' greased pan
6. Bake 25-35 minutes. Check with toothpick to make sure it's done. Sometimes I’ve had to bake it longer than the estimated time so keep an eye on it.

15 Simple Ways to be Happy in 2010

1. Be your own BFF (best friend forever). Enjoy your own company. Embrace everything about you! Without a doubt, it's the most important step towards being a happy person.
2. Smile, giggle, snicker, or chuckle! Smiling releases serotonin in the brain, which instantaneously gives your mood a lift.
3. Dream big in every area of life. Set your life in motion and manifest your heart's desire.
4. Shut the doors and the windows tight! And then put on your favorite song and sing out loud. Let it rip!
5. Cook a healthy, delicious meal. Serve it up pretty and savor the flavor, one bite at a time.
6. Expect a miracle. Believe that something wonderful will happen for you today. The universe is waiting to shower happy blessings on you.
7. Meditate, pray and chant. Research shows that people who are spiritual tend to be happier and healthier than those who are not.
8. Pull up your best pair of warm socks. Wiggle your toes and enjoy a cozy kind of bliss.
9. Sleep baby sleep. Seven or eight hours each night should increase your energy and decrease your moodiness.
10. Count your blessings daily. Gratitude, the emotion of thankfulness, is one of the key ingredients for living a happy life. Make gratitude a habit and happiness will be yours.
11. Wake up early! Start the day off on a happy foot, with a happy thought. The morning hours are full of spiritual energy and prana (life force).
12. Let the sun shine in. 20 minutes of sunlight per day improves mood and wards of Seasonal Affection Disorder (SAD).
13. Take a hot bath. Feel the tension melt away as you sink into a pool of happiness.
14. Say "Good Job!" Give yourself permission to pat yourself on the back. Recognize your accomplishments and positive qualities.
15. Happiness is contagious! Surround yourself with happy, positive people who share your values, your goals and dreams.

Thankful

I am thankful for a great long weekend home with family. It was hard to leave!

This holiday was extra special because family (aunt, two cousins) were able to make it to New York from Colorado. I enjoyed sleeping in, eating well, and just being entertained by family. I always enjoy having lots of people around, and sometimes miss that back in Syracuse.

I'm looking forward to December and trying to get myself pumped up for the holiday season. I'm looking forward to trying to plan more social things to do before the new year, hopefully figuring out some fun New Years plans, and settling into my new routine at my new place.

I've been trying to live by the, "Do what makes you happy," mantra lately. With the emphasis on Do, not just think about doing. Forget people who judge, people who are negative - I want to be happy.

It does make me happy :)

I've been privileged enough to have a summer internship turn freelance opportunity working with Lori and her "Happiness through Art" company. Every time I look at her work, it really does make me happy. It's so bright and so fun!
